The NSW Government is calling for creative thinkers and visionaries to make their mark on Australia’s first new city in 100 years by helping to name the streets and places of the proposed Bradfield city.
The Government said it is particularly seeking name suggestions which fit the following themes:
- First Nations Connection to Country – names that reflect Aboriginal technologies, language or people that connect the history of the place with the future of the city;
- Western Sydney’s diversity and achievements – names that showcase Western Sydney’s cultural diversity, heritage and future, and contributions to shaping our city’s rich identity;
- Australian innovation and excellence – names that relate to Australian achievements in science, technology, engineering and innovation.
Among the first places to be named will be the two-hectare Central Park in the heart of Bradfield City.
“For the park we’re inviting the community to submit First Nations names which reflect its important role as a welcoming gathering place,” the Government said in a statement.
Other ideas submitted will be considered to form part of a name bank for use as the city continues to grow and new spaces are delivered.
“Thousands of people will live and work in Bradfield city so it’s only fitting that the city’s future residents and workers should help us name its streets and landmarks,” said Minister for Planning and Public Spaces, Paul Scully.
“Whatever the inspiration, this is an opportunity for the community to make their mark on Australia’s first new city in 100 years.
“Bradfield is well on its way to becoming a thriving, globally connected city, with 10,000 new homes and 20,000 new jobs and getting these names right matters for how people will connect with the city as it grows.”
Community pop-up sessions, school workshops, and translated materials will support participation across Western Sydney, including First Nations and multicultural communities.
Following consultation, submissions will be reviewed against planning and Geographical Naming Board requirements, before the name bank is finalised.
The Government said Bradfield City will deliver 10,000 new homes and 20,000 jobs, with advanced manufacturing and future-focused industries.
