First public hearing for Victorian student pathways inquiry

A parliamentary inquiry looking at ways to better support students into careers in high-demand industries is holding its first public hearing today.

The Legislative Assembly Economy and Infrastructure Committee is set to hear from a range of witnesses, including representatives of the Victorian Government from the Department of Education and Department of Jobs, Skills, Industry and Regions.

Australian Centre for Career Education, Victorian TAFE Association, Apprenticeship Employment Network, Independent Tertiary Education Council of Victoria and Adult and Community Education Victoria are due to give evidence as well.

Four separate panels comprising universities and dual-sector universities, Local Learning and Employment Networks (LLENs) and Registered Training Organisations (RTOs) are also scheduled to take place.

“Employment pathways and opportunities are so crucial for students as they move from school, vocational education and training or higher education into the workforce,” Committee Chair Alison Marchant said.

“Healthcare, social assistance and construction are among a number of industries we’ve identified as in demand, so we’re looking closely at what can be done to better support aspiring workers.

“We also want to find out whether school career development is meeting expectations and how to better assist regional students and female students wanting to work in male-dominated industries.

“All of these witnesses should be able to provide us with a first-hand insight into what’s happening and how the transition from education to in-demand areas can be improved.”

You can watch the live broadcast of the hearing from 9:30am.

The full schedule and other inquiry related information are on the Committee’s website.
