NSW Police have launched two critical incident investigations following separate shooting incidents by Police in Sydney and Newcastle this morning.
In the first incident, NSW Police said officers from Kings Cross Police Area Command were called to a unit complex on St Neot Avenue in Potts Point, at around 10.50am following reports an armed man had entered the complex and assaulted two women.
“Responding police deployed a Taser; however, this was ineffective,” Police said.
“The man allegedly threatened attending officers with the weapon before a police officer discharged a firearm, shooting the man.”
Police say the condition of those injured is not known at this stage.
The investigation will be subject of an independent review by the Professional Standards Command and overseen by the Law Enforcement Conduct Commission.
In a separate incident, a man was shot by police in Newcastle this morning during an arrest.
At around 8.30am, the Northern Operations Support Group and Northern Region Domestic Violence High Risk Offender Team attended a unit block on Honeysuckle Drive to arrest a man wanted on five outstanding arrest warrants.
“Officers forced entry to a unit where a man – allegedly armed with an edged weapon – confronted police,” Police said.
“Two Tasers were deployed; however, both were ineffective against the man.
“The man allegedly continued threatening officers with the edged weapon before a police officer discharged a firearm, shooting the man.”
The 36-year-old man sustained a gunshot wound to his shoulder. He was taken under police guard to the John Hunter Hospital in a stable condition.
A crime scene was established and inquiries into the circumstances surrounding the incident are underway by Newcastle City Police District.
