The Victorian Government is investing $40 million to help motorcyclists get home safely with the release of its Motorcycle Safety Action Plan this week.
Minister for Roads and Road Safety, Paul Hamer said the plan will improve motorcyclist safety by investing in safer roads, better protection, and stronger support for riders.
“Motorcyclists are overrepresented in road trauma in Victoria, and that’s why Labor is delivering initiatives to save lives,” said Mr Hamer.
The plan includes $40 million to roll out motorcycle-friendly barriers, surface upgrades, and improved signage across the state, including at:
- Great Ocean Road, Corangamite
- Hodgins Road, Hastings
- Tyabb-Tooradin Road, Somerville
- Erskine Falls Road, Lorne
- Cureton Avenue, Mildura
- Bambra Aireys Inlet Road, Aireys Inlet
- Bambra-Boonah Road, Deans Marsh.
An additional $8.6 million will support delivery of key safety measures underthe Plan, which aims to cut the number of riders involved in road trauma as part of Labor’s target to halve road deaths by 2030.
The plan has been shaped by more than 100 partners including councils, rider groups and training providers.
The Plan will:
- Strengthen the Motorcycle Graduated Licensing Scheme, to support novice motorcyclists;
- Update the Learner Approved Motorcycle Scheme, to address the growth in electric motorcycles
- Work to increase the number of riders who wear personal protective gear.
Tragically, 61 riders died on Victorian roads in 2025, representing 21% of the state’s 291 lives lost last year, despite motorcycles representing less than 4% of total registered motor vehicles.
