WA science communication awards open

Applications for the second Minerals Research Institute of Western Australia (MRIWA) Science Communication Awards are now open.

The awards acknowledge outstanding minerals research conducted in Western Australia and the vital role of effective communication in increasing awareness and promoting uptake of research findings by industry.

The competition is open to industry professionals, students, researchers, and academics engaged in minerals research in Western Australia. Submissions are in the form of a three‑minute video presentation.

Mines and Petroleum Minister, David Michael.

“Effective science communication is not merely about conveying information – it’s about inspiring curiosity and fostering a deeper appreciation of the discoveries being made,” said Mines and Petroleum Minister, David Michael.

“Importantly, the MRIWA Science Communication Awards recognise the local talent contributing to minerals research ecosystem.

“Science communication is the vital conduit through which the complexities of science are translated into accessible, actionable knowledge for the benefit of all.”

Shortlisted finalists will be provided with a science communication masterclass to enhance their skills. The first prize winner will receive $5,000, with the winner to be announced at the MRIWA Research Showcase on 21 August 2024.
