Hobart emergency department welcomes new staff

The Royal Hobart Hospital Emergency Department has welcomed dozens of new doctors and nurses to its ranks following a successful recruitment drive.

The Emergency Department has appointed an additional 44 doctors and 25 nurses since recruitment commenced last year, with the majority already in post. Extra allied health and support staff have also been recruited.

“Importantly, the extra staffing provides the Emergency Department with the skilled workforce needed to fully utilise the additional capacity of the fantastic new and expanded facilities that opened last year,” the Tasmanian Department of Health said in a statement.

“This means more Tasmanians will be able to access timely emergency health treatment if and when they need it. In addition, welcoming so many talented new specialists provides a significant morale boost to the wider emergency department team working in this fast-paced and often stressful environment.”

The first stage of the Emergency Department expansion was completed in 2023, with the facilities increasing the department’s maximum capacity to 82 treatment points, including a $10 million 28-bed short stay unit.

“Recruitment to the posts has been occurring since last year and will enable the additional treatment points to be utilised 24 hours a day once all staff have commenced in their new roles,” the Department said.

The second stage of the Emergency Department expansion is currently underway.
