Western Australia has launched a new fellowship program aimed at attracting world-leading health and medical researchers to the State.
The State Government’s Future Health Research and Innovation (FHRI) Fund has set up a Distinguished Fellows Program offering three five-year fellowships to leading research experts.
The $5 million scheme aims to encourage health and medical researchers based anywhere in the world to relocate to WA to lead a significant, high-quality innovative research program.
“This is an amazing opportunity for leading health and medical researchers to relocate to Western Australia,” said Medical Research Minister, Stephen Dawson.
“We are offering a generous package to the successful candidates including support for relocation costs.”
The fellowships are available to internationally recognised academic researchers and clinical researchers in all clinical disciplines – medical, allied health, nursing and midwifery – at an experienced associate professor or a recently tenured professor level.
The FHRI Fund provides a secure source of funding to drive health and medical research, innovation and commercialisation – aimed at improving the health of all Western Australians.
Research must be aligned with at least one of the FHRI Fund’s focus areas – Aboriginal, rural and remote health, burden of diseases, and living with COVID-19 and long COVID.
One fellowship will be specifically dedicated to research in mental health.
“WA has an emerging health and medical life sciences industry primed to deliver new and exciting opportunities,” said Minister Dawson.
“We have a highly skilled, collaborative health and medical research workforce, and technologically advanced hospitals such as Fiona Stanley Hospital and Perth Children’s Hospital.
“Our researchers are also supported by outstanding research organisations including five universities – three of which have a medical school – and highly-regarded medical research institutes.”
