WA Govt announces regional art investment

A major investment by the WA Government is set to open up more arts experiences for Western Australians in regional communities.

Eight regional galleries have been earmarked to receive $314,247 in funding as part of the Public Regional Galleries Improvement Fund, which aims to improve access to high-quality arts and cultural experiences for regional audiences.

“Regional galleries play a vital role in connecting local communities with arts and culture, and this funding ensures those experiences are delivered in high-quality spaces,” said Creative Industries Minister, Simone McGurk.

“From Carnarvon to Albany, these upgrades will give more Western Australians the chance to enjoy professional touring exhibitions and local works in fit-for-purpose venues.”

Recipients of the funding can receive up to $25,000 for minor functional improvements or to secure new equipment for exhibition presentation, and up to $100,000 for projects involving significant enhancements to venue infrastructure or systems.

Installation of new equipment and infrastructure, including lighting and visual interfaces, such as graphic displays and other state-of-the-art gallery features, will help ensure regional audiences can enjoy high-quality art facilities.

This funding will also improve the capacity of the funded galleries to receive touring exhibitions, ensuring a better equality of access to cultural experiences across WA.

Recipients of this round of Public Regional Galleries Improvement Fund include:

  • Arts Narrogin – $18,509 for Arts Space Gallery Upgrades – Phase two;
  • Southern Forest Arts – $6,482 for upgrades to lighting, audio, security and signage;
  • Shire of Carnarvon – $58,176 for Carnarvon Art Gallery Upgrades Stage 3;
  • North Midlands Project Incorporated – $98,034 for the establishment of art storage facilities;
  • The Cannery Arts Centre – $23,994 for lighting upgrades to the Main Gallery, purchasing of additional audio-visual equipment and art storage facilities;
  • City of Albany – $17,643 for lighting upgrades to the City of Albany galleries;
  • Shire of Manjimup – $40,584 for new flooring, CCTV and a standalone digital kiosk; and
  • City of Greater Geraldton – Geraldton Regional Art Gallery – $50,825 for lighting upgrades and the addition of a modular wall.

“Strong, vibrant regional communities are built on more than just bricks and mortar – they are built on culture, connection and pride. These gallery upgrades are an investment in the heart of our regions,” said Regional Development Minister, Stephen Dawson.

“By improving local arts infrastructure, the Cook Government is helping regional towns attract visitors, support local jobs, and create new opportunities for artists and communities.

“This funding means regional communities and those exploring our great State won’t miss out on the kinds of exhibitions and experiences that people in Perth often take for granted.”
