NSW Police officer charged with assault

A NSW Police officer has been charged with assault following an arrest in Sydney’s CBD last year.

In a statement, NSW Police said that on Monday 27 May last year, officers were patrolling Central Railway Station when a man was reportedly seen jumping ticket barriers.

“The man ran from police and following a foot pursuit, he was arrested at Broadway,” Police said.

“During the arrest, an officer deployed OC spray before further police attended and restrained the man.”

Police commenced an internal investigation in relation to the incident.

Following extensive inquiries, a 36-year-old officer – a senior constable attached to a specialist command – was issued with a court attendance notice for common assault.

He is due to appear before Downing Centre Local Court on Thursday 23 October.

The officer is being managed in the workplace and his employment status is under review, NSW Police said.
