WA EV Network charges up new site

The WA EV Network has extended to the Pilbara with an electric vehicle fast charger officially opening in Karratha this week – the first of six planned to be installed by mid-2024.

Charging stations have also opened in Exmouth and Kununurra – with 14 sites now live across the state’s network, said Energy Minister, Bill Johnston.

“Western Australia’s transition to a cleaner, greener electric vehicle future is well underway, with the WA EV Network rolling out across the State,” the Minister said.

“We are delighted Karratha, Exmouth and Kununurra have joined the WA EV Network, with many more fast chargers opening soon.”

The Horizon Power EV charging stations are located at:

  • Karratha – Karratha City Shopping Centre carpark, 16 Sharpe Avenue;
  • Exmouth – Ningaloo Aquarium & Discovery Centre, 2 Truscott Crescent; and
  • Kununurra – Lot 228, Messmate Way

The charging sites have a 150 kilowatt (kW) fast charger that allows drivers to top up their EVs in as little as 20 minutes, said Climate Action Minister, Reece Whitby.

“The Cook Government is committed to building the WA EV Network, which will be the longest in Australia, providing vital infrastructure to open-up our vast State for electric vehicles,” said Mr Whitby.

“The WA EV Network supports the Cook Government’s commitment to net zero carbon emissions by 2050.”

RDA Pilbara CEO Tony Simpson joined Member for the Pilbara Kevin Michel MLA and Jason from Red Dog Rentals at the launch of Karratha’s EV fast charger at Karratha City Shopping Centre.

Exmouth’s charging station has an additional DC fast charger allowing four EVs to be charged at the same time.

The WA EV Network, delivered by Horizon Power and Synergy as part of the Cook Government’s $43.5 million investment to boost EV infrastructure, includes 98 charging stations in 49 locations connecting Perth to regional Western Australia.

There have been more than 3,200 charging sessions along the WA EV Network since the first charging site went live in Geraldton in April 2023.

Other charging stations are opening soon in Esperance, Warmun, Derby and Halls Creek.
