Victorian Minister for Environment, Steve Dimopoulos, has announced an expansion of the state’s 50 battery recycle collection points, making it safer and easier to dispose of used batteries.
The Government is funding local councils and registered charities to create the new battery drop-off points and upgrade 17 existing sites to handle more batteries safely.
“We’re making it safer and easier to dispose of batteries, reducing fire risks and protecting our environment from harmful chemicals,” said Minister Dimopoulos.
“When batteries are recycled correctly, the materials can be recovered and given a second life as a new product.”
The Government says more than 30 of the battery drop-off locations will be in regional Victoria.
Recycling batteries divert hazardous materials from landfill and recycle valuable metals such as copper, nickel and steel for reuse in new products.
Victorians can find their nearest battery recycling location at recyclemate.com.au.
