The University of Western Australia’s (UWA) new Mumbai campus has officially opened as part of the state’s efforts to strengthen education, economic, and people-to-people connections with India.
Premier, Roger Cook joined UWA leaders at the campus in Andheri East, where he delivered an address and unveiled a commemorative plaque marking the opening.
The Premier highlighted India’s importance to Western Australia and outlined how UWA’s presence would strengthen education, research, and industry collaboration between the two countries.
He also emphasised Western Australia’s strengths as an international education destination and the opportunities the campus would create for Indian students, researchers, and businesses to connect with the State.
“India is one of our largest trading partners, and there is real potential to expand what we do together across energy, investment, trade, tourism, and education – helping to create jobs and business opportunities for Western Australians,” said Mr Cook.
“The opening of UWA’s Mumbai campus marks a significant milestone in Western Australia’s growing relationship with India and Maharashtra.
“It will give Indian students access to a world-class Western Australian education while creating stronger links between our students, researchers, and industries.
“I congratulate UWA on this important achievement and look forward to seeing its Indian campuses develop the next generation of globally connected graduates, researchers, and industry leaders.”
The official opening forms part of the Premier’s investment and trade mission to India and Vietnam, scheduled for 17 to 25 September.
The mission aims to showcase Western Australia’s strengths across energy, investment, international education, primary industries, innovation, and workforce development, while creating new opportunities for business, industry, and institutional collaboration.
The Mumbai campus will welcome its first cohort this month, allowing students to gain a globally recognised UWA qualification while remaining in India and developing connections with Mumbai’s business and innovation ecosystem.
A global top 100 university and founding member of Australia’s prestigious Group of Eight, UWA will offer undergraduate and postgraduate programs across STEM and business, including computer science, cybersecurity, data science and AI, business management, global business enterprise and innovation, MBA, and Master of Information Technology.
The campus will support partnerships between Maharashtra and Western Australia in areas including technology, artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, critical minerals, clean energy, research, and innovation.
“A strong education ecosystem plays a key role in ensuring the economic vibrancy of our State,” said Tertiary and International Education Minister, Tony Buti.
“With the expansion of UWA’s international footprint through the opening of its first international branch campuses in Mumbai, the university is taking a bold step forward in their commitment to global academic excellence and international pathways, and creating a stronger bridge between Australia and India.
“This builds on Western Australia’s strong foundation in delivering quality international education through its existing offshore branch campuses and transnational education partnerships.
“Congratulations to UWA on this significant milestone.”
The Mumbai campus is the first of two UWA campuses to open in India, with its Chennai campus scheduled to commence operations next month.
