Preparatory works are now underway at the Macquarie Point Multipurpose Stadium site in Hobart, marking another major milestone in one of Tasmania’s largest and most significant infrastructure projects.
Hazell Bros is undertaking the bulk earthworks following a competitive procurement process. The works, which will run through until mid-2027, will prepare the site for stadium construction and include bulk excavation of around 100,000 cubic metres of soil, site preparation and archaeological investigations, before major construction starts.
“Today marks another important milestone as we continue turning the vision for Macquarie Point into a reality,” said Premier, Jeremy Rockliff.
“The diggers have arrived, the builders are here, and we are getting on with the job.
“Through our 2030 Strong Plan for Tasmania’s Future, we are delivering this once in-a-generation project.”
Procurement for the main stadium construction is also progressing, with a tender process currently underway. The successful construction contractor is expected to be appointed at the end of the year.
“These preparatory works are an exciting first step as we prepare for activity to increase,” said Tasmanian Minister for Macquarie Point Urban Renewal, Eric Abetz.
“The precinct will become one of Australia’s great waterfront urban renewal projects, delivering improved public spaces, stronger connections to the city and waterfront, and of course, our stadium.
“Every milestone brings us closer to creating a precinct that will deliver lasting economic activity and benefits for Tasmania.”
