Safety upgrades begin on Sturt Hwy

SOUTH AUSTRALIA

An upgrade of the Sturt Highway, which includes construction of new overtaking lanes and upgraded rest areas, will begin this week, the South Australian Government has announced.

The new overtaking lanes will include eastbound and westbound lanes near Stockyard Plains and an eastbound lane near Waikerie.

There will also be upgrades to the eastbound rest area at Stockyard Plains, and to the eastbound and westbound rest areas at Kingston-on-Murray.

The contract for these works has been awarded to Downer EDI Works Pty Ltd. The project is expected to be completed by late 2023.

The Government says the upgrades will improve safety and freight efficiency along the Sturt Highway and support regional economic growth.

They form part of the South Australian and Australian governments’ $87.5 million upgrade of the Sturt Highway between Renmark and Gawler which is part of the Roads of Strategic Importance initiative.
