Two men have been charged over an alleged attempt to use a drone to deliver drugs and other contraband into a correctional facility in the state’s south yesterday.
In a statement, NSW Police said that at around 1.10pm on Friday, officers attached to Monaro Police District were notified to reports of a drone flying in prohibited airspace above a correctional facility in Cooma.
“Following inquiries, police attended a nearby park on Barrack Street, where they located and spoke with two men, aged 31 and 38,” NSW Police said.
“During a search of the men and a nearby vehicle, officers allegedly located a drone box and controller, mobile phones, and SIM cards.”
Following inquiries, officers allegedly located and seized a drone with an attached package from a nearby creek.
During a search of the package, officers allegedly located and seized an amount of tobacco, prohibited drugs, a mobile phone, and several other items.
The items were seized for forensic examination.
The two men were arrested and taken to Cooma police station, where they were both charged with operate remotely piloted aircraft within prohibited airspace, unlawfully deliver or attempt to deliver anything to inmate, and supply cannabis over indictable and less than commercial quantity.
They were both refused bail to appear before Bail Division Court 3 today.
