NT Health confirms system-wide pressures amid weather crisis

NT Health has announced it is experiencing system-wide pressures across the Territory due to simultaneous and ongoing emergency responses to weather events.

“Our health system is experiencing a significant increase in presentations, overcrowding within emergency departments and limited patient flow, due to the influx of Territorians to our regional centres,” NT Health said in a statement.

“NT Health is implementing a coordinated approach across the health service to manage capacity challenges, optimise resource use and support enhanced patient flow.”

In line with NT Health Capacity Management Plans, Code Yellow declarations are in place at Royal Darwin Hospital, Palmerston Regional Hospital and Alice Springs Hospital to prioritise patient and staff safety and strategically coordinate escalation processes through clear governance arrangements.

Royal Darwin Hospital has seen an increase in the number of presentations and admissions of regional patients who have been evacuated to Darwin due to extreme weather events and major flooding.

In addition, Royal Darwin Hospital has been accommodating an additional 17 patients who were evacuated from Katherine Hospital last week.

NT Health’s primary health care services and social, emotional and wellbeing services in Katherine, that closed last week due to flood risk, have re-opened to the community.

Meanwhile, a boil water alert remains in place for Nauiyu, Palumpa and Jilkminggan.

“NT Health is continuing to monitor evolving weather conditions across the Territory and will plan for, and manage the delivery of health services and resources accordingly.”

“NT Health staff are working hard to provide quality, patient-centred care. Please be kind to our people during these periods of high demand.”
