NSW Health issues call for more midwives

NSW Health is inviting registered nurses to take up the opportunity to train as midwives in a NSW public hospital in 2027.

Training includes completion of a postgraduate course and employment as a midwifery student to gain clinical experience.

Applications for NSW Health’s 2027 MidStart are now open and will close on 1 June.

Training locations are available across the state, including in rural and regional areas. Associated university enrolments into a postgraduate course open later in the year.

“Midstart is a great pathway for registered nurses to become midwives in Australia’s largest public health system, and an opportunity to play a vital role in supporting women through the journey from pregnancy to parenthood,” said Health Minister, Ryan Park.

“I’d like to encourage registered nurses interested in becoming a midwife to take this opportunity to apply for this annual program.

“Our midwives do a fantastic job in our hospitals across the state, making a difference every day in the lives of women, babies, and their families.”

Registered nurses are eligible to apply if they are:

  • an Australian citizen or Australian permanent resident
  • a Registered Nurse (Division 1) with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia at the time of application.

Candidates may also be eligible for scholarships.

More information on MidStart program, including details on how to apply, is available on the NSW Health website: https://www.health.nsw.gov.au/nursing/employment/midstart/Pages/default.aspx.
