New Victorian Public Service Commissioner appointed

Career public servant, Brigid Monagle, has been appointed to the role of Victorian Public Sector Commissioner.

Minister for Government Services, Danny Pearson today announced Ms Monagle had accepted the position and will move from her most recent role as Acting Secretary of the Department of Families, Fairness and Housing (DFFH) to take up the new post.

Ms Monagle will be responsible for continuing to drive excellence, professionalism, and integrity in the public sector, he said.

“Brigid Monagle brings great skills and experience to the role of Commissioner, having served in senior roles across the public service. She is a passionate advocate for public-sector excellence and will provide strong leadership.”

“I congratulate Brigid on her appointment and thank Greg Wilson for his work as Acting Commissioner during these past months,” said Minister Pearson.

With extensive experience in leadership roles across the Victorian Public Service, Ms Monagle has also served as an Associate Secretary at DFFH and a Deputy Secretary at the Department of Premier and Cabinet.

In the second half of 2020, Ms Monagle was seconded to the then-Department of Health and Human Services to serve as Deputy Secretary, Public Health Policy and Strategy during the response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

“Victoria’s public service is world-class, and I look forward to playing a role in maintaining the high degree of trust Victorians and government have in our public servants, while helping to make the workforce more inclusive so we can deliver the best possible services for all Victorians,” Ms Monagle said in a statement today.

The Victorian Public Sector Commission plays a critical role in contributing to a high-performing, trusted and inclusive public sector. It provides support and guidance on strategy, governance, and service delivery across the public sector, which represents about 10 per cent of the state’s workforce.

Greg Wilson has served as Acting Public Sector Commissioner since October 2022 while a recruitment process took place following the move of former Commissioner Adam Fennessy to head the Australia and New Zealand School of Government.

Ms Monagle will start her term as Commissioner on Monday, 3 April.
