The WA Government has announced the appointment of Owen Whittle to the Salaries and Allowances Tribunal, the independent statutory authority responsible for setting the remuneration for senior public officials.
Mr Whittle (pictured) is chief executive officer of the West Australian Music Industry Association and Chair of the Work Health and Safety Commission. He has previously held roles as non-executive director at WorkCover WA, secretary of UnionsWA, and Chair of the Welfare Rights and Advocacy Service.
He joins Emeritus Professor Margaret Seares (Chair) and Dr Michael Schaper on the three-person tribunal.
“Owen Whittle brings a wealth of experience to the Salaries and Allowances Tribunal,” said WA Premier, Roger Cook.
“The tribunal plays an important role in setting the salaries of senior public office holders independently from the government of the day.
“Mr Whittle will support the tribunal to continue to set executive position salaries that allow Western Australia to attract the best and brightest people to these important roles while being considerate of community expectations.”
The tribunal ensures a fair and equitable system of remuneration in Western Australia for:
- the Governor of Western Australia;
- Judges;
- Members of Parliament
- Directors General of government departments;
- chief executive officers and elected members of local governments;
- chief executive officers and directors of government trading enterprises; and
- members of public university governing councils.
Mr Whittle’s appointment is for three years.
