A 53-year-old man has been charged following an investigation into offensive behaviour, including the alleged draping of a Palestinian flag on the pedestrian bridge at the centre of last year’s Bondi Beach terror attack.
The bridge is the location from which accused father-and-son gunmen, Naveed and Sajid Akram, shot dead 15 people and injured 41 on 14 December last year.
In a statement, NSW Police said officers attached to Eastern Suburbs Police Area Command and Operation Shelter commenced an investigation after receiving complaints about the actions of a man on the Campbell Parade bridge at around 3pm yesterday.
“Police were told the man allegedly hung a flag from the bridge and performed offensive hand gestures,” NSW Police said.
“Following inquiries, police arrested a 53-year-old man who was taken to Surry Hills Police Station.
“He was charged with behave in offensive manner in/near public place/school.”
Unverified photos (pictured) from social media show a Palestinian flag hanging over the side of the bridge.
The man was refused bail and will appear before Bail Division Court 7 today.
