EOI opens for Victorian water board members

The Victorian Government is seeking a wide range of community members to join the boards of Victoria’s 18 water authorities, nine catchment management authorities (CMAs), and the Birrarung Council.

Minister for Water, Gayle Tierney opened expressions of interest for the positions today.

She said Victoria’s public water sector was central to supporting jobs, economic growth, and the environment as Victoria faces a growing population and the impacts of a changing climate.

There will be around 120 board positions available across the state, overseeing the delivery of critical water services and regional catchments and waterways.

“A wide range of community members were appointed to board positions in 2023 and we want to continue to build on this in 2025,” said Minister Tierney.

“If you think you have the skills for the role, are committed to the public provision of water, and want to make a difference to our community, economy and environment, I encourage you to apply.”

The Minister said positions with the Birrarung Council play a key role in the protection and preservation of the Birrarung (Yarra) River.

Water sector experience, governance and finance skills, an understanding of community engagement, and experience in land and infrastructure management will support applications, she said.

The 2023 appointments process resulted in boards that more closely reflect the diversity of Victoria’s community, with women making up more than half of water board members across the sector.

Regional Victorians are encouraged to apply, along with applicants with an understanding of Aboriginal cultural values and traditional ecological knowledge of how to manage land and water resources.

The selection process will be led by an independent panel. Expressions of interest close on Tuesday, 8 April 2025. For more information on board vacancies, visit www.boards.vic.gov.au.
