Community on board with $53m expansion plan for Canberra school

The ACT Government says its $53 million plan to expand and modernise Telopea Park School has strong support from the Territory’s Inner South community, with the pre-Development Application (DA) YourSay Listening Report, released today.

The report captures feedback from a six-week engagement with residents, students, parents, local businesses and other members of the community.

“It’s great to see community support for investing in Telopea Park School and planning for the future needs of our growing city,” said Minister for Education, Rachel Stephen-Smith.

“The Telopea Park School modernisation project is part of Labor’s plan for the Inner South, creating a contemporary school campus that continues to meet the needs of current and future students and benefits the wider Inner South community.”

Participants were asked to share their views on site plans for the project, which will deliver:

  • new general and specialist learning spaces;
  • a multipurpose hall including a double gymnasium;
  • 81 additional car parking spaces;
  • new green spaces and landscaping enhancements.

During the engagement, the project team held almost 250 face-to-face conversations and attracted more than 1,000 webpage visits. The Government said many participants recognised the need to expand and modernise Telopea Park School to accommodate future growth and support quality education in the area.

Participants also welcomed opportunities for community access to the proposed new facilities and recognised the potential for additional sporting and multipurpose spaces to benefit the wider Inner South community.

The feedback will inform the next steps of the project as the ACT Government begins work on a DA, following approval of the Major Plan Amendment in September.

The community will have another opportunity to review detailed plans and technical documentation and provide feedback through the DA process.
