Applications open for Transport for NSW apprenticeships

Applications have opened for 44 Transport for NSW apprenticeship and traineeship spots across the state in 2027.

The opportunities include 43 apprenticeships within Transport’s Road Maintenance and Resilience division, covering Bridge Construction and Maintenance, Civil Construction, Electrical, Heavy Vehicle Mechanical and Metal Fabrication, as well as one Civil Construction and Design traineeship within Transport’s Infrastructure Projects and Engineering division.

With most positions based in regional NSW, the program offers people the opportunity to gain nationally recognised skills while building a career close to home.

Locations include Albury, Ballina, Bega, Broken Hill, Dubbo, Gundagai, Goulburn, Hay, Narrabri, Orange, Parkes, Tamworth, Tweed Heads and Wagga Wagga.

Successful applicants will receive paid on-the-job training, mentoring and practical experience, working alongside experienced professionals who help maintain and improve NSW’s road network.

“Whether you’re finishing school, looking for a hands-on career or wanting to learn a trade, this program offers a pathway to a rewarding career while helping build the future of NSW,” said Minister for Roads and Regional Transport, Jenny Aitchison.

“These are more than just jobs. They are opportunities to work on projects that help connect communities, keep people moving, and shape the future of transport across NSW.

“Apprentices and trainees gain hands-on experience while completing nationally recognised qualifications, setting them up with skills that are in demand across the industry.”

For Chloe Lucas, an apprentice in Bridge Construction at Bega, the program provided an opportunity to stay close to home while developing skills and building a career.

“There is always something different and new to learn and it’s a very good industry to get into if you are not wanting to do the same thing every day,” said Ms Lucas.

“The education aspect is also really good. There is always somebody to ask a question of, and working alongside experts in the field allows you to see how things are done properly.”

For Lily Stewart from Tamworth, the opportunity led to a full-time role with Transport’s road construction team after she completed her Civil Construction apprenticeship early.

“It is a great opportunity to work on various construction projects and awesome the experiences you can have each day,” said Ms Stewart.

“There are certainly plenty of opportunities for women to pursue an apprenticeship and a career in construction.”

Transport for NSW has also been engaging with high schools across regional NSW through career expos, industry events and hands-on workshops to give students in Years 10, 11 and 12 an insight into the trades and professions that help keep NSW moving.

The program is also helping to build a more diverse workforce, with women making up 20% of apprentices who have joined the program over the past five years, while 21% have been from a First Nations background.

“If we’re serious about tackling skills shortages, we need more opportunities like the Transport 2027 Apprentice and Trainee Program that connect people with real jobs and secure career pathways,” said Minister for Skills, TAFE and Tertiary Education, Steve Whan.

“That’s why the Minns Labor Government is investing a record $3.46 billion in vocational education and training. It’s about delivering the skills that work and building the workforce NSW needs for the future.

“From Chloe in Bega to Lily in Tamworth, these apprentices show what’s possible when people are given the chance to earn while they learn. I’d encourage anyone thinking about their next step to put their hand up and apply.”

Applications for Transport for NSW’s 2027 Apprentice and Trainee Program are open now and close at midnight on Sunday 11 October.

“An apprenticeship or traineeship with Transport can be the start of a rewarding career, with opportunities to learn, grow and build a future that lasts,” said Transport for NSW Acting Secretary, Trudi Mares.

“Whether you’re in regional NSW or Sydney, our people make a difference every day by keeping communities connected and moving. We’re proud to back them with opportunities to learn, develop and thrive.

“We’re looking for people from all backgrounds, perspectives and experiences, and we strongly encourage women and First Nations people to apply.”
