Young NSW Police constable killed in crash

A 20-year-old NSW Police constable has been killed in a motor vehicle crash in Sydney’s south west.

In a statement, NSW Police confirmed that at around 1.30am this morning, a fully marked police vehicle was travelling along north along Gibbons Street, Redfern, under lights and sirens when it crashed into a tree.

The passenger in the police vehicle – a female constable – died instantly.

“It is with incredible sadness that we honour Constable Mia Lay, who tragically died in the line of duty at Redfern this morning,” NSWP stated.

“We extend our deepest condolences to Constable Lay’s family, loved ones, colleagues and friends.

“This is a solemn day for the NSW Police Force and we stand united.”

NSW Ambulance paramedics treated the driver – a male constable – at the scene before he was taken to Royal Prince Alfred Hospital in a stable condition.

The circumstances of the crash are now under investigation, with a critical incident declared.

Constable Lay joined the NSW Police Force just 16 months ago.
