Woman charged over WA scrub fires

WA Police Strike Force Vulcan officers have charged a 30-year-old woman as a result of their investigation into three scrub fires that occurred last week.

It is alleged by Police that at around 3:10pm on Tuesday, 4 February, the woman lit a fire in vegetation on Carden Drive near Greenfield Street in Cannington, and then she lit a second fire on Nicholson near Fleetwood Park Road in Lynwood.

It is further alleged that at around 5:20pm, the woman set another fire in bushland at Hester Park on Spencer Road between the intersections of View Avenue and Ellison Drive. This fire quickly spread requiring multiple DFES units, including the firefighting helicopter, to extinguish the fire before it could spread to nearby residences.

The 30-year-old woman from Brentwood was charged with three counts of Wilfully Light or Cause to be Lit a Fire Likely to Injure or Damage.

This offence carries a maximum penalty of 20 years’ imprisonment. She appeared before the Armadale Magistrates Court on Monday and was bailed to next appear on Monday, 10 March.

Timely information received from members of the public was a vital component of this investigation and Strike Force Vulcan officers urge anyone with any information in relation to bush or scrub fires to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or via www.crimestoppers.wa.com.au.
