NSW Police have charged a 36-year-old woman who they allege sent multiple threatening letters to organisations and individuals, including politicians, government agencies and a media outlet.
In May, officers from the Security Investigation Unit of the Counter Terrorism & Special Tactics Command established Strike Force Eckon in response to a large volume of letters being sent to an exhibition space in Darlinghurst, a place of worship in Lakemba, politicians, individuals, a media outlet and government agencies at the local, state and federal level.
“Police will allege in court that the nature of these letters were abusive in nature and pertaining to be from another person,” NSW Police said in a statement.
On 16 July, detectives executed a search warrant at a home in Constitution Hill, where a number of electronic devices were seized. Following further inquiries, at around 6am today, officers arrested a woman at the same premises in Constitution Hill.
The woman was taken to Parramatta Police Station where she was charged with 62 offences:
- 19 counts of send document threatening death or grievous bodily harm;
- 14 counts of stalk/intimidate intend fear physical harm (domestic);
- 10 counts of stalk/intimidate intend fear physical harm (personal);
- Six counts of use postal/similar service to menace/harass/be offensive;
- 10 counts of make false accusation with intention subject other to investigation;
- Use false document to influence exercise of public duty;
- Dishonestly obtain financial advantage by deception; and
- Use false document to obtain financial advantage.
She was refused bail to appear at Parramatta Local Court today.
