WA recognises resource sector excellence

The recipients of the Department of Mines, Industry Regulation and Safety’s annual Resources Sector Awards for Excellence have been announced in Perth.

Iluka Resources received a Golden Gecko award for environmental excellence for commissioning a bespoke seeding machine ‘Flora Restorer’ to support rehabilitation works at their Eneabba mine site.

The innovation has significantly improved the diversity and growth of revegetation after mining, in an area with challenging natural conditions for seedling growth.

Ngurra Kujungka, together with Newcrest Telfer, won the Community Partnership Resources Sector Award for delivering community-driven sport and recreation programs for the Martu people of the Western Desert.

The partnership has seen Ngurra Kujungka’s programs expand to include sport, art, music and culture, which are used as a vehicle to drive improved outcomes in health, employment, education and community development.

Mines and Petroleum Minister, Bill Johnston congratulated the winners for their contributions.

“The McGowan Government is committed to building a responsible and sustainable resources sector, and every year the Awards for Excellence showcase the partnerships and projects setting an excellent example of how this can be achieved,” Minister Johnston said.

“Sharing stories of success encourages other resource companies to continually strive to find new and improved ways of making a positive impact on Western Australian communities and the environment.”
