Victoria announces inquiry into McCrae landslide

The Victorian Government has today announced its intention to establish a Board of Inquiry into the cause of a landslide that occurred in McCrae within the Mornington Peninsula Shire.

In January, multiple homes were evacuated in McCrae and a council worker was hospitalised after a house slid down a hill and collided with other homes following the landslide.

“We need to get to the bottom of what has happened here because too many people have been let down and too many questions remain unanswered,” said Premier, Jacinta Allan.

“An independent Inquiry will ensure local residents’ voices are heard and help us do everything we can to ensure it doesn’t happen again,” said Minister for Local Government, Nick Staikos.

The Board of Inquiry will be asked to determine the cause of the landslide, what happened and whether it could have been avoided.

It will also determine the adequacy of preventative measures taken to mitigate the risks following other landslides in McCrae.

The Inquiry’s findings and recommendations will identify any measures deemed necessary to prevent or mitigate risk of similar events occurring in the future across Victoria, the Government said in a statement.

Once established, the Inquiry will develop a process for locals to engage with its work, with details on how people can submit their stories to be released in the coming weeks.

“We thank our dedicated emergency services for their response efforts and supporting those impacted. This is a challenging time for these residents – we know this next step will help to deliver the answers they need,” said Minister for Emergency Services, Vicki Ward.

The Inquiry will be asked to deliver its final report later this year, including recommendations to Government.
