Two Victoria Police officers killed, one wounded in rural shooting

Two Victoria Police officers have been killed and another wounded in a shooting on a rural property at Porepunkah, around 300km north-east of Melbourne yesterday.

Victoria’s Chief Commissioner, Mike Bush, has confirmed that 10 officers from the Sexual Offences and Child Investigation Team were attending the property to serve a warrant when the tragedy unfolded at around 10am on Tuesday.

Two of the officers, a 59-year-old detective, and a 35-year-old senior constable, died from their injuries. The older officer was reportedly just days away from retirement.

The shooter, believed to be self-proclaimed sovereign citizen Dezi Freeman (pictured, below), was last seen running into bushland. He is believed to be armed with his own weapons and guns taken from the slain officers.

His wife and children arrived at a Police station yesterday evening, with Police saying there is no indication they were on the run with the suspected gunman.

In recent years, Dezi Freeman appeared on Channel Nine’s A Current Affair program in a story about a neighbourhood dispute.

Victorian Premier, Jacinta Allan and Prime Minister, Anthony Albanese, have both this afternoon expressed their shock and sadness over the incident.

“I have been briefed by the Chief Commissioner of Victoria Police. This situation remains active,” said Premier Allan in an online statement.

“Victoria Police officers, and all our first responders, show extraordinary bravery and courage every single day.

“They are the best of us – and the thoughts of all Victorians are with them today.”

Victorian Police Minister, Paul Papalia said the incident has devastated Victoria Police, the local community and all Victorians.

“Every day our police members pull on their uniforms and uphold the oath they swore to protect Victorians – all day, all night – in all weather,” he said.

“Tonight, two of our brave members won’t return home. They made the ultimate sacrifice.

“I offer my deepest thoughts and sympathies to everyone affected by this horrific crime, and my utmost gratitude to the emergency services who are continuing to respond and investigate.

“We stand ready to offer any support that Victoria Police and the town of Porepunkah need – they will not go through this alone.”

Queensland Premier, David Crisafulli, was quick to send his “thoughts and prayers” to Victoria police following news of the deaths.

Posting to X, Premier Crisafulli wrote: “The thoughts and prayers of Queenslanders are with the Victorian Police family this afternoon. Police face dangers every day to keep us safe. This incident is another tragic reminder of that. The community of Porepunkah and all those impacted by this tragedy are in our hearts today.”
