Two police officers injured in separate alleged assaults

A 33-year-old man has faced a Sydney court charged with allegedly assaulting Police and frontline workers following a crash at Kotara earlier this week.

In a statement, NSW Police said that at around 8.10pm on Wednesday 8 July, officers were called to Charlestown Road, Kotara, following reports of a car crash.

At the scene, police were told a ute had lost control and crashed into a parked vehicle before crashing through the fence of a home and into a tree.

“Several members of the public stopped to assist the driver of the ute; however, were allegedly assaulted by the driver,” NSWP said.

“An officer and police dog attached to the Dog Unit arrived a short time later and were also allegedly assaulted by the driver.

“A 33-year-old man was arrested by police with the assistance of responding firefighters and paramedics.”

The man was taken to the John Hunter Hospital for treatment under police guard, while a NSW Police senior constable was treated by paramedics for lacerations to his face.

The 33-year-old was later charged with assault police officer in execution of duty without actual bodily harm, assault police officer in execution of duty cause actual bodily harm, hinder or resist police officer in the execution of duty, assault frontline emergency worker-no actual bodily harm, drive recklessly/furiously or speed/manner dangerous, not give particulars to other driver, and affray.

In a separate incident, a 43-year-old man will face court today after a Police officer was allegedly assaulted in the Sydney’s east.

At around 9.30am yesterday, officers were patrolling Bondi Beach as a part of Operation Shelter, when they were alerted by members of the public about a man who was acting erratically and allegedly screaming at traffic on Campbell Parade at Bondi Beach.

“Police requested NSW Ambulance to attend for a mental health assessment. While waiting for NSW Ambulance, the man, aged 43, attempted to leave. He allegedly became violent towards police and during the struggle, the man allegedly bit a Sergeant on his leg,” NSWP said.

He was arrested and taken to Surry Hills Police Station and charged with assault police officer in execution of duty cause actual bodily harm.

He was refused bail attend Bail Division Court 7 today.
