Two men charged over assault on NT Police

Northern Territory Police have arrested two males following the alleged assault of officers in a violent incident at Gapuwiyak in East Arnhem Land yesterday.

In a statement, NT Police said that at around 1:15pm on Tuesday, officers received reports of unrest at the local Gapuwiyak clinic and deployed to the location.

“Whilst at the clinic, a 26-year-old male picked up a pair of scissors and threatened officers. He was disarmed with assistance from other community members before being arrested. During the arrest, another 63-year-old male punched and elbowed the police officer arresting the other male,” NT Police said.

“Additional Police were called to convey the offenders to Gapuwiyak Police Station, while a group of up to 30 community members attended the clinic and became aggressive. The crowd eventually dispersed without incident.”

Both males have since been charged with two counts of Assault Police Officer. They were bailed to appear in Gapuwiyak Local Court on 18 June.

“Assaulting police officers is completely unacceptable and will not be tolerated,” said Senior Sergeant Daniel Bell.

“Our officers are dedicated to protecting and serving the community, and we take any act of violence against them very seriously.”
