Territory digital driver licence a swipe closer as new laws pass

The Northern Territory Government has passed new laws which will pave the way for the Territory’s first-ever digital driver’s licence.

The Motor Vehicles Amendment (Digital Licences) Bill 2026 establishes the legal framework for eligible Territorians to carry and display a secure digital version of their driver licence.

Minister for Logistics and Infrastructure, Bill Yan said passing the legislation marked an important step towards delivering greater security and convenience for Territory motorists.

“This is a practical reform that cuts red tape and makes an everyday government service easier to use,” Minister Yan said.

He said Territorians would retain the choice to use their physical driver licence.

“Digital licences are entirely optional. Territorians are under no obligation to use them and can continue using a physical card,” Mr Yan said.

Once available, the NT digital driver licence will be able to be used to prove a person’s authority to drive, confirm they are over 18 and verify their identity in participating situations.

The digital licence is being built to internationally recognised standards, with strong security features designed to protect personal information and reduce fraud.
