Tenders on track for new Territory public housing

Tenders are set to be released over the coming weeks for the construction of 37 new residential homes and upgrading of 22 homes in the Northern Territory’s Barkly Region.

The tenders come off the back of recently released ABS data, which shows that new housing investment in the Northern Territory has led to a 10.5% reduction in severe overcrowding since 2016.

“The Territory Labor Government understands the importance of a good home and we can’t wait to see the Barkly region abuzz with building and upgrade activity,” said Minister for Housing and Homelands, Selena Uibo.

“These building works taking place throughout the Barkly region are job-creating projects. They provide local people with employment and training opportunities and the chance to build homes for their own communities and families.”

The Minister said the new homes will be a range of one-bedroom to five-bedroom dwellings, and will achieve the silver standard of the Liveable Housing Design Guidelines. The majority of new housing in remote areas achieve at least a 6 star energy efficiency rating, with some achieving over 7 stars, to promote efficient use of electricity and water.

The four tenders for the homes are worth an estimated $24.75 million and include:

• 10 new one-bedroom urban public housing homes across two new unit complexes in Tennant Creek;
• 27 new remote public housing homes in Canteen Creek (8 homes), Ampilatwatja (8 homes, which includes 6 replacement and two new), Ali Curung (5 homes), Wutunugurra (4 homes) and Imangara (2 homes);
• Room to Breathe modifications to 22 remote public housing homes in Ampilatwatja (8 homes), Tara (6 homes), Canteen Creek (4 homes), Ali Curung (2 homes) and Wutunugurra (2 homes).

The remote works are part of the $2.1 billion Remote Housing Investment Package, jointly funded by the Northern Territory and Australian Governments.

The tenders will be progressively released from this month to mid-April 2023.

In addition to these four tenders, a public tender with an estimated worth of $6 million for the construction of eight new homes in Elliott town camps, which closed on 20 February 2023, is expected to be awarded in April 2023.
