A tender has opened for the design of the new Gillen Oval Multi-Sport Precinct in Alice Springs.
The project, which will be located next to Centralian Middle School, is set to deliver top-notch sporting and recreation facilities for Central Australia.
The development will feature multipurpose training fields, new change rooms and toilet facilities, a canteen, shaded spectator areas, increased car parking, and improved landscaping.
Minister for People, Sport and Culture, Jinson Charls said the precinct reflects the Northern Territory Government’s focus on creating healthy, active communities and is another milestone in the year of action, certainty and security.
“Sport brings people together, and the Gillen Oval Multi-Sport Precinct will give local clubs and schools a place to train, compete and connect,” said Mr Charls.
“We are proud to invest in infrastructure that supports youth development, grows participation, and builds stronger communities in Alice Springs.”
Once complete, the precinct will offer flexible and accessible facilities that bring together clubs and age groups, promote coaching and volunteering, and enhance liveability for families in the region, he said.
Minister for Lands, Planning and Environment, Joshua Burgoyne, welcomed the procurement progress on the project and its role in delivering meaningful outcomes for local families.
“This precinct is about delivering real results for our community, keeping kids engaged, giving clubs the space they need, and restoring Alice Springs’ vibrant lifestyle,” said Mr Burgoyne.
“We promised to back our sporting community, and this project shows we are delivering on that promise.”
Construction of the precinct will commence following the completion of the detailed design phase, with works expected to take 12 months.
In addition to the Gillen Oval development, work is already underway to upgrade nearby Jim McConville Oval with the installation of four new light towers. These lights will allow for year-round use of the oval, with final design review expected this month and installation by the end of 2025.
