A teenage learner driver has been charged with pursuit offences after allegedly hitting a NSW Police officer with a car in Goulburn and then fleeing the scene on the weekend.
In a statement, NSW Police said that at around 8.30pm on Saturday, officers from The Hume Police District saw a Holden sedan on Sloane Street in Goulburn with an allegedly obscured number plate.
“Police activated their warning lights and attempted to stop the sedan on Park Road, Eastgrove, however, when the driver allegedly failed to stop as directed, a pursuit was initiated,” NSW Police stated.
“The pursuit continued onto Sloane Street, Goulburn, where the pursuit was terminated due to safety concerns.”
At around 11.30pm, officers from The Hume Police District saw a white Holden sedan parked in a carpark near the intersection of Sydney Road and Common Street in Goulburn. Police will allege the sedan had been involved in the earlier pursuit.
“Officers approached the vehicle, with warning lights activated, in an attempt to speak to the occupant,” NSW Police said.
“As officers approached, the sedan has started, and after being directed to stop by police, has allegedly driven towards and struck a male constable standing nearby.
“The sedan then drove from the carpark and allegedly struck a marked police vehicle before turning onto Sydney Road and continuing south.
“Police have again directed the driver to stop, and when the driver failed to do so, a further pursuit was initiated.”
The pursuit continued on Sydney Road but was terminated near Lagoon Street due to safety concerns, Police said.
The constable allegedly struck by the sedan suffered a minor leg injury that did not require further treatment.
Early Sunday morning, a 16-year-old boy was arrested at a home in Goulburn.
He was taken to Goulburn Police Station where he was charged with:
- Police pursuit – not stop – drive dangerously – first offence;
- Police pursuit – not stop – drive dangerously – second offence;
- Use etc offensive weapon to prevent lawful detention;
- Assault police officer in execution of duty without actual bodily harm;
- Not stop when directed to do so;
- Not give particulars to other driver;
- Negligent driving (no death or grievous bodily harm);
- Use class B or C vehicle number plate obscured/defaced (two counts);
- Learner exceed speed more than 45km/h – estimated (two counts);
- Learner not accompanied by driver/police officer/tester (three counts).
The boy was refused bail to appear at a Bail Division Children’s Court.
