Tasmanian Govt accepts all 191 recommendations of child safety inquiry

The final part of an independent review into the Tasmanian Government’s actions taken in response to the Commission of Inquiry has been tabled in parliament.

Premier, Jeremy Rockliff said the tabling of Part B of former Australian Public Service Commissioner Peter Woolcott AO’s independent report marked an important step in strengthening Tasmania’s child safety framework.

“The finalisation of the Woolcott Review reinforces our commitment to ensuring robust oversight and accountability across all systems that protect children,” Premier Rockliff said.

The second part of the Woolcott Review looked at regulatory oversight arrangements and their intersection with the justice system following the Commission of Inquiry into the Tasmanian Government’s responses to Child Sexual Abuse in Institutional Settings.

The Government says it will carefully consider the findings and recommendations in Part B alongside those in Part A before providing a formal response.

Attorney-General, Guy Barnett said the Government accepted all 191 recommendations of the Commission of Inquiry and we remain steadfast in delivering them.

“We have already implemented significant reforms including the Child and Youth Safe Organisations Act, the establishment of the Independent Regulator, and the Change for Children Strategy,” the Attorney-General said.

Premier Rockliff thanked Mr Woolcott for his report.

“This report will guide us in continuing to strengthen protections for children and young people,” he said.

The Woolcott Review final report is available to read on the Keeping Children Safe website.
