The Tasmanian Government has announced work to deliver the first stage of the Tasmania Devils’ High Performance Centre is set to start in the coming weeks, as the teams prepare for their entry into the AFL.
Acting Minister for Sport, Gavin Pearce said as momentum for the state team continues to build, it was exciting to see the community infrastructure coming to life.
“Batchelor Construction Group will build Oval 3 at the Kingborough Sports Precinct, marking a major step forward in establishing Tasmania’s first AFL and AFLW teams and delivering community infrastructure,” Minister Pearce said.
“Oval 3 will house the Kingborough Tigers Football Club, and become the Devils’ secondary training oval.
“Oval 3 will be a high quality, shared facility that strengthens community sport while supporting the development of our inaugural Devils teams.
“This project is part of a once-in-a-generation investment that will elevate Tasmanian football and create a lasting legacy for players, clubs and communities across the State.
“A key part of our 2030 Strong Plan for Tasmania’s Future is delivering the community sporting infrastructure our clubs need for the future, which is what this oval does.”
Oval 3 is scheduled for completion in late 2027 and will be owned by Kingborough Council once finished.
Under an agreement between the Tasmanian Government, the Devils and Kingborough Council, Oval 3 will become the Kingborough Tigers’ primary training venue, with the Tigers’ current main oval transitioning to regular use by the Devils.
The Tigers will relocate to the newly developed site above the Twin Ovals, which will feature a new oval, clubrooms and changing facilities. During the winter season, the Tigers will also have access to the two cricket ovals for training and competition.
Acting Kingborough Mayor, Christian Street said the Council is excited about what this project will mean for the future of sport in Kingborough and the opportunities it will create for our community.
“The new oval will provide a home for the Kingborough Tigers while also delivering a valuable community asset that will benefit local players, clubs and the wider community for years to come,” Mayor Street said.
All sports and activities within the Kingborough Sports Precinct will continue to operate throughout construction.
