Queensland honours SES volunteers

Queensland has held its annual State SES Week Award Ceremony with the top volunteers recognised for their service and dedication.

Acting Minister for Fire and Emergency Services, Mark Furner said the SES played a crucial role in helping those affected by flooding in Queensland and northern NSW earlier this year.

“Being an SES volunteer is no easy feat – it requires hours of training, dedication to serve and courage to respond in the very worst of conditions,” Mr Furner said.

“Whether it’s first aid, flood boat operation, technical rescue or land search, SES volunteers can often be the difference between life and death.”

Member for Mount Ommaney, Jessica Pugh said the work of the SES was crucial in moments of disaster.

“Our skilled SES crews selflessly put the safety of Queenslanders first, and for that – we thank you,” Ms Pugh said.

“I am honoured to be able to pay tribute to our SES volunteers on behalf of all Queenslanders.”

Acting SES Deputy Commissioner, Joanne Greenfield said the State Award ceremony recognised those who have excelled in the service.

“While all SES volunteers do a wonderful job, our award winners have gone above and beyond what is expected of them and proven to be very deserving of the state’s top honours,” A/Deputy Commissioner Greenfield said

“At QFES we pride ourselves on upholding our values of respect, integrity, courage, loyalty and trust, and the recipients today have certainly demonstrated these values in their work.

“Thank you to all volunteers for their tireless efforts to assist communities before, during and after disasters.”

This year sees the inaugural presentation of the Suncorp ‘Spirit of SES’ Award, and Suncorp Group CEO, Steve Johnston said Suncorp was proud to be the Principal Community Partner of the Queensland SES.

“SES volunteers are a vital part of the community, particularly when severe weather events occur as we’ve experienced this year,” Mr Johnston said

“On behalf of Suncorp Group, I would like to thank all SES volunteers for their tireless work and important community contribution which is consistent with the Suncorp spirit.”
