NSW Police Cybercrime Squad detectives have charged a public servant following an investigation into an alleged data breach involving more than 5,600 sensitive government documents.
On Sunday, NSW Police received a report that the documents had been allegedly accessed and downloaded by a staff member.
“Detectives attached to State Crime Command’s Cybercrime Squad were notified and commenced an investigation under Strike Force Civic,” NSW Police said in a statement.
Following inquiries, strike force detectives arrested a 45-year-old man in Sydney’s CBD, who was taken to Day Street Police Station.
Police executed a search warrant at a home in Homebush West, where they seized electronic devices including a hard drive.
The 45-year-old man was charged with access/modify restricted data held in computer.
He was granted conditional bail to face Downing Centre Local Court on Wednesday 3 June.
“Police believe all the alleged stolen data has been located and secured and there was no external compromise to the agency’s system,” NSW Police said in a statement.
