Problem Katherine taxi rank to be removed

The Northern Territory Government has confirmed it will permanently remove a taxi rank outside a Woolworths supermarket in Katherine following ongoing anti-social incidents at the location.

From Monday, 28 July, the taxi rank will be closed to improve public safety, address long-standing community concerns, and create a more welcoming environment in the heart of town, Member for Katherine, Jo Hersey, today confirmed.

“Locals deserve to feel safe while doing their shopping or going about their day,” said Ms Hersey.

“In our year of Action, Certainty and Security, we’re listening to the community and acting.

“This change, made in partnership with NT Police and government agencies, will help reduce crime and improve the experience for tourists, families, and local businesses.

“It’s a practical, common-sense decision that will help restore pride in our town.”

Alternative taxi ranks remain available nearby on Warburton Street and Lindsay Street, ensuring continued accessibility for passengers while improving public safety in a key commercial area, said Ms Hersey.

Cassandra Harney from the Katherine Hotel welcomed the removal of the taxi stand.

“The anti-social behaviour at the taxi rank was not a good look for the town and its removal is a step in the right direction,” she said.

“Our security team is often required to manage anti-social behaviour at the nearby taxi rank, even though it’s unrelated to our venue.

“We can create a safer and more welcoming environment for locals and tourists when the taxi rank is no longer on the main street.” she said.

Crime statistics from January to May 2025 compared to the same period in 2024 show a 36% drop in commercial break-ins and a 14% reduction in house break-ins; however, alcohol-related incidents remain a concern in the Katherine community.
