Police officer charged with assault of pro-Palestine protestor

A NSW Police officer has been charged with the alleged assault of former Greens candidate, Hannah Thomas (pictured), who was injured during an unauthorised pro-Palestine protest in Sydney’s west in June.

In a statement, NSW Police said that on Friday 27 June, officers were called to a protest in front of a business at Lakemba Street in Belmore.

“As police attempted to move on some of the protesters a 35-year-old woman sustained facial injuries and was hospitalised for treatment,” NSW Police said.

An investigation was launched by the NSW Police Professional Standards Command.

Today, a 33-year-old officer – a senior constable attached to a specialist command in the South West Metropolitan Region – was issued a court attendance notice for assault occasioning actual bodily harm.

He is due to appear before Bankstown Local Court on Tuesday 18 November.

“The officer is being managed in the workplace and his employment status is under review.”

“A critical incident investigation which was launched following the incident and oversighted by the Law Enforcement Conduct Commission, remains active and current,” NSW Police said.
