NT Treasurer slams Federal Budget

Northern Territory Treasurer, Bill Yan says last night’s Federal Labor Budget announcement “let Territorians down”.

“To Labor, the Northern Territory is worth little more than the Bruce Highway in Queensland,” said Mr Yan.

“All the Federal Government could commit was a conditional $200 million for a road that leaves the Territory on the hook for the rest.

“Despite the growing momentum in our economy, we were given no confidence on our major infrastructure projects such as the AROWS project, supporting infrastructure for the Beetaloo Basin, and the Middle Arm Precinct.

“With no mention of Darwin Port, it is clear that Labor has cut adrift their Member for Solomon, Luke Gosling.”

The Treasurer said that despite three out of four Territory representatives in Canberra sitting in the Labor party room, the Territory has been “completely left behind” in this Budget.

“It is clear that Marion Scrymgour and Malarndirri McCarthy are also invisible to those calling the shots in the Federal Labor Government.”

“Billions of dollars have been promised for other parts of regional Australia, yet all the Territory got was maintenance money.

“The Northern Territory has everything the nation needs, yet once again that has fallen on deaf Labor ears in Canberra,” he said.
