NSW Preventive Health Summit dates confirmed

The NSW Government has confirmed the upcoming NSW Preventive Health Summit will be held in Western Sydney in early October.

The Summit, which forms part of the Government’s response to the Special Commission of Inquiry into Healthcare Funding, will focus on how to prevent disease and improve health outcomes with a strong focus on health equity.

The two-day forum will bring together experts from across the health sector, multiple agencies, and other stakeholders to build consensus on potential health system and cross government approaches to support preventive health.

“The NSW Preventive Health Summit will bring experts together to find new ways forward to strengthen preventive health and reduce rates of chronic disease,” said Health Minister, Ryan Park.

“We know that chronic disease impacts people differently in NSW, the Summit will focus on addressing these differences and improving health outcomes for the people across the State.

“Improving overall health outcomes can makes a significant positive impact on people’s lives, while also reducing pressure on our hospitals now and into the future.”

The Summit will be held at Parramatta over two days on Wednesday, 7 October and Friday, 9 October.

The Summit will consider how to develop and prioritise solutions that improve health and prevent disease for communities across the state, including addressing:

  • Preventing chronic disease
  • Supporting mental health and wellbeing
  • Increasing the focus on healthy ageing
  • Focussing on priority populations including Aboriginal communities experiencing health inequities.

“The NSW health system is one of the highest performing in the world and we have a strong commitment to preventive health with a range of programs in place to tackle chronic disease,” said NSW Health Secretary, Susan Pearce AM.

“The NSW Preventive Health Summit is just one step in building a sustainable health system by identifying practical system-wide actions to boost and strengthen health prevention initiatives for the people of NSW.

“We’re pleased to be playing an important role in bringing together key stakeholders to consider future approaches to supporting preventive health.”

Discussions will be informed by NSW Health’s report prepared for the Summit, The Health of the People of NSW 2026, which includes the latest overview of the health of the NSW community.

Initial discussions are underway with a broad range of stakeholders across the health system, consumer organisations, universities, non-government organisations, clinical groups, and peak bodies to ensure a range of perspectives are reflected at the Summit.

NSW Health will prepare a report following the summit which will be presented to NSW Government.
