NSW Police Commissioner Mal Lanyon APM has taken an icy plunge into Sydney Harbour to help raise funds for a good cause, as part of the annual Polar Plunge challenge.
The Polar Plunge, organised by the Law Enforcement Torch Run – a charity made of up of NSW Police Force and other law enforcement agencies – takes place every year to raise money for athletes of Special Olympics Australia.
The event sees participants plunge, leap and jump into icy water at 26 locations across Australia.
In NSW, 12 plunges are taking place, including the Commissioner’s plunge at Marrinawi Cove, Barangaroo, on Sunday morning.
Ten teams, including the Commissioner’s crew, Sydney City Police, Traffic and Highway Patrol officers and Health, Safety and Wellbeing Command, took part in the Sydney plunge, helping to raise $32,000 for their efforts.
Commissioner Lanyon said the Polar Plunge is a fantastic opportunity to support the outstanding work of Special Olympics Australia.
“As police we’re proud to do our bit to raise awareness and help create opportunities for these outstanding athletes,” Commissioner Lanyon said.
“I encourage police officers and members of the community to get involved, by taking the plunge themselves or by making a donation.
“Every dollar raised helps Special Olympics Australia continue delivering life-changing sporting and social opportunities while recognising the remarkable achievements of its athletes.”
