New strategic resource areas approved for Victoria

Victorian Minister for Planning, Sonya Kilkenny, has approved new Strategic Extractive Resource Areas (SERAs) in the Cardinia Shire, Hume City and Baw Baw Shire local government areas to safeguard land for future quarry developments.

The areas identified are:

  • Lang Lang (Cardinia Shire)
  • Oaklands Junction (Hume City)
  • Trafalgar (Baw Baw Shire).

The Minister said the approval means builders will have access to the rock and sand needed to deliver the infrastructure Victoria needs.

She said extensive consultation with communities, industry and local councils helped to shape the areas, including refinements to boundaries and stronger assessment requirements.

“Every home, every school, every hospital starts with rock and sand – we’re making sure the supply is there,” said Minister Kilkenny.

“These areas set clear boundaries for where quarries belong, with strong planning controls still in place.”

Developments like homes, schools and shops will continue to be carefully assessed near these areas, she said.

The decision supports the Government’s Extractive Resources Joint Ministerial Statement.

“This is about securing the raw materials builders need to deliver the homes and infrastructure Victorians rely on,” Minister for Energy and Resources, Lily D’Ambrosio.
