New IBAC Police Oversight Deputy Commissioner appointed

The Victorian Government has appointed Liana Buchanan as a Deputy Commissioner of the Independent Broad-based Anti-corruption Commission (IBAC).

Ms Buchanan will lead IBAC’s important Police Oversight work.

Attorney-General, Sonya Kilkenny said Ms Buchanan (pictured) brings extensive experience in oversight, integrity and legal system reform with senior leadership roles across the regulatory, justice and community sectors.

“I congratulate Ms Buchanan on her appointment as Deputy Commissioner of the Independent Broad-based Anti‑corruption Commission – she brings formidable expertise and leadership to the role,” the Attorney-General said.

“Ms Buchanan’s extensive experience in legal and integrity matters makes her a strong addition to IBAC’s leadership team.”

Since 2016, Ms Buchanan has served as the Principal Commissioner for the Commission for Children and Young People.

In this role, she oversaw the establishment and implementation of the Reportable Conduct Scheme and Child Safe Standards – strengthening protections against child abuse in institutional settings.

Ms Buchanan has also been a part-time Commissioner at the Victorian Law Reform Commission since 2015, contributing to key reviews and recommendations to the Attorney-General.

She will commence her three-year term as IBAC Deputy Commissioner on 24 March.
