New Commander for Tasmania Police Western District

Tasmania Police has announced the appointment of Nathan Johnston to the rank of Commander of Police.

Commander Johnston joined Tasmania Police in 2003 and brings more than two decades of experience across the state, particularly in the Northern and Western Districts.

This week, he steps into his new role as Western District Commander.

Starting his career as a constable at Launceston in 2004, he has since held a range of leadership positions, including Sergeant in Launceston, Inspector of the Launceston Uniform Division, and Detective Inspector in the Northern Criminal Investigation Division.

He has also led specialist areas such as Tasmania Police’s Bomb Response Capability and the Western Police Operation Centre during COVID-19.

Commissioner Donna Adams congratulated Commander Johnston on his appointment.

“Nathan has demonstrated significant strengths in policing and relationship-based leadership, with a proven ability to collaborate and build trust across diverse groups. I am confident his leadership and commitment will play a pivotal role in shaping the future of Tasmania Police,” she said.

The Commissioner also acknowledged and thanked Commander Stuart Wilkinson for his excellent leadership in the Western District since 2023, as he moves into his new role leading the Family and Sexual Violence Command.

Commander Johnston is looking forward to once again working in Northwest Tasmania.

“I’m excited to step into the role and continue to build relationships with the community, working together so that people feel safe. I am focused on supporting the members of the Western District providing an environment where they can deliver a high level of service to the community,” he said.
