New Canberra transport interchange completed

Transport Canberra has completed construction of the new Woden public transport interchange, which once operational will help move more than 10,000 Territorians each day.

The new interchange delivers modern shelters, improved amenities and a future‑proofed design that will make traveling to and from Woden a better experience, combined with the broader renewal of the precinct, said Minister for Transport, Chris Steel.

“The completion of the new Woden Interchange is a major milestone in the transformation of Woden Town Centre, better connecting the community to jobs, education, and housing,” said Minister Steel.

“This project isn’t just a massive improvement to Woden’s main street, with a safe, light rail-ready interchange – it’s part of the largest investment in Woden in over 50 years.

“The Government is serious about investing in Woden. With the new CIT Campus, electric bus depot and new interchange complete, the Government will now focus on the delivery of a new community centre and outdoor pool in addition to light rail, to make sure that this growing part of Canberra has the infrastructure it needs.”

The previous 50-year-old interchange was demolished to make way for the Woden CIT Woden Campus, and deliver the vision in the Woden Town Centre Master Plan of creating an east-west pedestrian boulevard, and an on-street bus and light rail ready interchange on Callam Street.

The interchange has been designed to accommodate light rail, with both bus and light rail stops incorporating similar high quality design features to the rest of the light rail network. While planning continues on stage 2B, the light rail stops at Woden have been modified to serve rapid buses in the central platforms in the interim.

The new Woden interchange will continue to receive Rapid bus services from Tuggeranong and from Belconnen via the City Interchange and Civic, along with local services operating across the Woden Valley, Weston Creek, Molonglo and Tuggeranong.

Testing and commissioning works will now begin before the Woden interchange will begin operations on 20 April.
