New awards to recognise NT student literacy and numeracy

Outstanding Northern Territory students are set to be recognised through a new awards program celebrating excellence in literacy and numeracy, launched today by the NT Government.

The Minister for Education and Training Excellence Awards will shine a spotlight on students from Transition to Year 9 across government and non-government schools, with two students per year level to be nominated – one for literacy and one for numeracy.

Building on previous student recognition programs dating back to 2006, the new awards expand to include numeracy for the first time.

Minister for Education and Training, Jo Hersey said the awards reflect the Government’s commitment to giving Territory kids the best start in life.

“We took a commitment to the election to boost school attendance and get schools back to basics with a focus on literacy and numeracy,” Minister Hersey said.

“Since then, in our year of action, certainty and security, we have rolled out explicit teaching in classrooms, reinstated School Attendance Officers to get 388 more kids back to school and announced major secondary education reforms to commence next year.

“These awards will celebrate students who are achieving excellence in literacy and numeracy, while inspiring their peers to reach even greater heights. By ensuring every student has access to quality education, resources, and opportunities, we are preparing them to thrive and succeed in the jobs of the future.

“I look forward to presenting certificates to these outstanding students at the end of the school year.”

Nominations open today and close on 17 October 2025.
