The Western Australia Police Force (WAPF) is coordinating a joint investigation into the origins of an unidentified item that washed up on a remote beach at the weekend.
“We want to reassure the community that we are actively engaged in a collaborative effort with various State and Federal agencies to determine the object’s origin and nature,” WAPF said in a statement on Monday.
“The investigation is ongoing, and until further information is available, we urge everyone to refrain from drawing conclusions.”
To maintain the integrity of the investigation, Police are currently guarding the object.
This measure has been taken to ensure the preservation of potential evidence and facilitate further expert examination, WAPF said.
It says the object is being treated as hazardous, until its origin can be established.
“At this early stage it appears the object did not originate from a commercial aircraft,” Police said.
“WAPF would like to thank those members of the public who located the item and alerted authorities.”
